One of the great things about living in the Kitchener Waterloo area is that there are great activities for everyone staged all year round. This is particularly true of the Christmas season. Waterloo Region residents have all kinds of fun Christmas activities to choose from.
Here’s a look at some Christmas events happening in our region that we hope you find useful whether you are a long time resident who needs to be reminded of dates, new to our area and just exploring what it has to offer or considering becoming a Waterloo Region homeowner and what to get a great taste of just what wonderful communities it is made up of.
The CP Holiday Train
The CP Holiday Train is charitable event that sees a beautifully decorated train make its way from Montreal to Vancouver every Christmas season. The event collects donation of food to be donated to food banks across the country and since 1999 has collected 4.5 million pounds of food and raised C$15.8 million.
The train will be stopping in Cambridge on November 29th at 4 p.m. before beginning its visit to Ayr at 5:20 p.m. There will be entertainment from Alan Doyle and Beautiful Band and a chance to admire (and photograph) the beautifully lit train.
Bingemans’ Gift of Lights
Bingemans’ Gift of Lights is another great Waterloo Region Christmas tradition that residents and visitors have been enjoying for years. The event features two 200-foot tunnels as well as over 300 static and animated light displays.
This year’s display has already begun, but as of November 29 it will be extended to seven nights a week throughout the rest of the season.
This event is a great way to enjoy stunning seasonal light displays without having to leave the warmth of your vehicle. If you prefer the idea of walking through all the illuminated wonders, you can do that on December 1st and again on January 4th.
Wonders of Winters
This event, staged at Waterloo Park will kick off this year on Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m. Wonders of Winter offers something for everyone and stages special parties on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve that are suitable for the whole family.
Attractions at the event include the beautiful illuminations, horse drawn carriage rides, visits with Santa and his elves and more.
Kitchener Christkindl Market
The Christkindl Market in Kitchener is one of those holiday events that can be as practical to visit as it is seasonally magical. Thanks to all the wonderful local vendors it’s a great place to do some Christmas shopping for food, decorations and gifts. But there is also free public skating, music, more food, photo opportunities and live demonstrations.
The market is staged between December 5 and December 8 at Kitchener City Hall and this will be its 23rd year, making it one of the oldest German Christmas markets in North America.
Elf the Musical
Who isn’t charmed by the story of Buddy the Elf, a character made famous in the Will Ferrell movie that has become a staple of holiday viewing?
Elf was made into a wonderful musical too, and this year a production is being staged at the Hamilton Family Theatre in Cambridge from November 20th through December 29th.
This is just a taste of what is on offer this holiday season in the Waterloo Region. There’s more, and you can read about other events at the official Waterloo Region website. As Waterloo Region real estate agents who are also locals ourselves, we attend events like these with our own family and who knows, perhaps we’ll see you there!
