The term outdoor room may seem a little strange when you first think about it but it really isn’t. Once the nicer weather returns and those long summer evenings stretch out in front of you, there is nothing quite like spending time in the great outdoors but it is an even nicer experience if you can do so in style and comfort.
Adding an outdoor room is becoming more and more popular with homeowners looking to get the most out of the real estate they have invested in. Extending your home’s usable living space to include the outdoors is not only an investment in your enjoyment of your home but also, if it is done right, can add to its perceived value as well.
Planning Your Outdoor Room
Many people find that they already have the basic ‘skeleton’ for an outdoor room in place already. That may be a patio, a deck of just a nice piece of open land that can be ‘built’ upon. If you are starting from a patio or an open space you will need to consider how you are going to connect the space to the home. Creating a pathway using interlocking pavers is a very good option as such things are great looking and very durable as they are not prone to the staining and cracking that standard paving stones can be.
If you are not making use of a deck space then you will also have to give some thought the ‘walls’ or boundaries that will separate the space from the rest of the land. Because it is an outdoor space a plant or shrub covered trellis can be very attractive or you can simply use plants alone to create an organic border that will only become even more beautiful as time passes.
Furnishing Your Outdoor Room
Any room needs great furniture and an outdoor room space is no exception. As humans we often forget that we also a part of Nature, and that we should occasionally take the time to reconnect with the sense of wonder and peace that being outdoors brings, wherever you live. The outdoor furnishings you choose can help you do that. Choose soothing Earth tones – greens, browns, yellows – in the colors of the furnishings, then maybe echo them in an outdoor rug to really give the space a real room feeling.
You should also take into account your own preferences and personality. What do you like? Are you the life and soul of the party always ready to entertain , or the quiet, peaceful type looking for a space to unwind in after a long day? Once you know what you want, it is easy to begin to execute your space.
To finish the room make sure to centre the bulk of the outdoor furniture around a heat source, such as an outdoor stove or fire pit so that you can still make use of the space on a cooler evening and perhaps even well into the autumn. Lighting is important as well. Do you like the idea of strings of brightly coloured party lights, or solar-powered orbs of softer light? As long as they are rated for outdoor use than almost any option goes, offering you yet another chance to truly make the space your own.
